Mawlamyine (Moulmein) is the capital of the Mon State. It is also one of the largest city in the country. Mawlamyine is an ancient Mon town.
Kyauktalon Taung (Hillock) is an interesting flat rock formation 300ft (91m) in height with a Buddhist shrine situated on top. It lays at the eastern side Mawlamyine-Mudon highway. It is a very steep climb to the top and quite challenging for the adventurers.
The Death Railway is a 415 kilometres (258 miles) railway between Thailand and Myanmar built by the Japan Empire during World War II, to support its forces in the Burma campaign.
About one kilometer west of the clock tower in the direction of Kyaikkami in Mon State lies the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, which contains 3,771 graves of Allied prisoners of war who died during the construction period of the railway-lines. Most of those buried were British and some were Americans, Dutch, and Australian soldiers.
